Senior Backend Engineer (Integrations & Platform)

Location: Remote across the United States and Canada; candidates must have at least 5 to 6 hours of daily overlap with the EST-based team. Travel may be required up to once per quarter for off-sites and team gatherings. Toronto office access is optional and does not constitute a hybrid requirement.

Base salary: USD $150,000–$185,000 for candidates in the United States; CAD $130,000–$170,000 for candidates in Canada.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain bidirectional data integrations with government and enterprise partners, including partners with limited documentation.
• Build reliable asynchronous processing with queues, retries, idempotency, eventual consistency, duplicate handling, dependency management, and validation failure handling.
• Develop backend services, AWS Lambda functions, and internal tools that eliminate manual support work and help non-technical colleagues diagnose and resolve issues.
• Implement structured logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and other observability capabilities for integration systems.
• Debug production systems, establish reusable integration standards, and improve reliability, data consistency, and error rates.
• Collaborate with external vendors on API changes and coordinated deployments; mentor engineers and share technical learnings.

Requirements

• 5 to 8+ years of senior-level, hands-on experience in backend, platform, or integration engineering, focused on reliable systems for complex external integrations.
• Strong experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
• Experience building and maintaining complex data integrations at enterprise or government scale; experience must involve deep data integration work, not only SSO, API configuration, or cloud deployments.
• Strong understanding of asynchronous workloads and processing.
• Experience developing reliable, production-grade backend systems.
• Strong debugging skills using logs, metrics, and tracing.
• Production proficiency with at least one SQL or NoSQL database.
• Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment.

Nice to have

• AWS experience with Lambda, EventBridge, or SQS; Azure experience is transferable.
• Frontend or full-stack development experience.
• Experience with financial, banking, or similarly complex data integrations.
• GraphQL API design and MongoDB or DynamoDB for asynchronous state management.
• Experience with legacy enterprise or government systems.
• Multi-tenant architecture experience.
