Staff AI Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote in the United States; remote from anywhere in Europe; or hybrid from offices in Helsinki, Oulu, or Tampere. Candidates residing in Alaska, Delaware, Iowa, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Dakota, West Virginia, or Wisconsin are not considered.

Salary: $169,150–$199,000 for Region 3, $180,200–$212,000 for Region 2, or $198,050–$233,000 for Region 1, depending on US location.

What you will do

• Own the architecture and technical direction of the agentic software delivery pipeline, including orchestration, context management, tool calling, reliability, throughput, cost, and developer experience.
• Extend agentic workflows across specification checks, test generation, automated review, CI failure triage and repair, release verification, observability, and post-deployment signals.
• Prototype workflows on real tickets, validate them with engineering squads, and harden successful experiments into production infrastructure and paved paths.
• Build evaluation sets, LLM-as-a-judge grading, versioning, tracing, dashboards, and metrics for merge rate, rework, time-to-signal, cost per change, and escaped defects.
• Design risk-based sandboxing, permissions, human checkpoints, guardrails, and privacy controls for agents operating on health data, security, infrastructure, and other systems.
• Partner with platform, developer productivity, security and privacy, AI infrastructure, mobile, backend, product, design, and engineering leadership teams to drive adoption.

Requirements

• 6+ years building and operating production systems that other engineers depend on, including developer tooling, internal platforms, or AI infrastructure at scale; demonstrated outcomes are valued over years alone.
• Production experience with agentic coding workflows or autonomous loops, such as background agents producing pull requests, automated review, CI repair, or test generation, with adoption and measured results.
• Ability to reason about specification, review, testing, CI/CD, release, and operations as one lifecycle system.
• Technical leadership across teams without direct management responsibility, including writing designs and making architecture and risk decisions.
• Strong fundamentals in a mobile domain or backend APIs, concurrency, distributed systems, testing, debugging, and reliability, with the ability to verify AI-generated output.
• Fluency in one of backend, iOS, or Android, plus the ability to work across platforms and learn new technology stacks quickly.
• Understanding of security, privacy, sensitive personal data, and safe agent access to real systems.
• Ability to operate with ambiguity, shape requirements through experimentation, communicate clearly, collaborate with skeptical engineers and non-engineering partners, and persist through failed experiments or changing tooling.

Nice to have

• Deep experience with coding-agent skills, MCP servers, hooks, sub-agent orchestration, or headless runs.
• Experience building evaluation harnesses or benchmarks for coding agents, or LLM-as-a-judge grading tied to build and test outcomes.
• Experience with sandboxed execution at scale, ephemeral development environments, VM or container fleets, or macOS build infrastructure.
• Experience with developer productivity measurement, including DORA, SPACE, or DX Core 4, and using metrics to guide decisions.
• Experience shipping to mobile apps or other environments with slow, expensive feedback loops.
• Experience in digital health, wearables, MedTech, or other privacy-sensitive or regulated products.
• Contributions to open-source AI projects or a portfolio of projects using current agent capabilities.
• Experience mentoring engineers or leading an engineering community of practice.
