Forward Deployed Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote - USA; periodic travel to customer shops is required, including remote and on-site customer work.

Salary: USD 117,000–143,000 per year.

What you will do

• Work with shop owners, service advisors, and technicians to identify workflow problems and translate them into scoped, shippable solutions.
• Design, build, and deploy AI-powered workflows and agents using LLMs, RAG, and tool use for repair order writing, estimating, parts sourcing, and other shop tasks.
• Integrate RO Writer and third-party systems, including parts catalogs, accounting, and payment platforms, through APIs.
• Build evaluation and monitoring systems so AI outputs are accurate, grounded, and trustworthy.
• Run customer pilots, gather feedback, iterate quickly, and partner with Product and Engineering to turn successful solutions into scalable product features.
• Document learnings, create playbooks for Support, Training, and Customer Success, and represent customer needs within Engineering.

Requirements

• Professional software engineering experience with Python and/or TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience building with LLMs, including prompt design, agents or tool use, RAG, and evaluating output quality.
• Ability to explain AI-driven development methods used over the past 18 months, including how software is planned, built, tested, shipped, and improved.
• Experience working in small teams to produce applications and modules that improve or simplify end-user workflows.
• Demonstrated results expressed through end-user benefits, financial impact, and quantitative measures such as time saved, cost reduced, revenue gained, or adoption.
• Strong experience building and consuming APIs and integrating third-party systems.
• Excellent communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to non-technical shop owners and listening effectively.
• Ability to work through ambiguity and take messy real-world problems to working solutions with little hand-holding.
• Willingness to travel periodically to customer shops.

Nice to have

• Experience in automotive, auto repair, small-business, or vertical SaaS environments.
• Experience in a customer-facing technical role such as solutions engineering, implementation, or technical consulting.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms and modern deployment practices.
• Experience using AI coding tools in daily work.
