Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Cost Engineering)

Location: Remote Canada; open only to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.

Base pay: CAD $153,000–$213,000 per year.

What you will do

• Own and deliver quarterly team goals, lead engineers through ambiguous and open-ended problems, and support delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and product development, articulating technical constraints and evaluating risks and trade-offs.
• Identify and resolve project, process, technology, and business issues.
• Support the operations and availability of team artifacts through metrics, escalation, keep-the-lights-on work, and on-call support.
• Set and improve code review and design standards, communicate technical practices through writing and tech talks, and develop engineering talent through feedback and guidance.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
• Experience developing highly available distributed systems with technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience supporting the scaling of large sales events such as Prime Day, Black Friday Cyber Monday, or other sales holidays.
• Experience tuning autoscaling, CPU and memory usage, and multithreading for compute workloads.
• Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components using elegant, simple, and extensible designs.
• Ability to write high-quality, understandable code and make significant changes safely in large codebases using appropriate tools and practices.
• Ownership of professional growth and proactive feedback-seeking from teammates, managers, and stakeholders.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
