Lead Software Engineer – Payments

Location: Fully remote; work from wherever you do your best work, with quarterly in-person gatherings at one of hirify.global's global offices. Berlin is listed as an office location.

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, hire, and manage a team of payments engineers, including feedback, performance reviews, and career development.
• Set the technical direction and long-term architecture for payment-domain services, including gateway integrations, authorization, capture, refunds, payouts, and reconciliation.
• Oversee marketplace capabilities such as KYC onboarding, merchant configuration, settlement instructions, deductions, and merchant invoicing.
• Ensure reliable flow-of-funds primitives, including idempotency, ledgers, events, audit trails, and finance- and compliance-supportable systems.
• Own PSP and partner integrations and oversee dispute, chargeback, fraud, and escalation workflows with Operations.
• Partner with Product, Legal/Compliance, Finance, and Support while improving testing, safe rollouts, observability, and incident response.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading, mentoring, or people-managing software engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
• Strong backend engineering experience with distributed systems, microservices, asynchronous processing, resilient APIs, and eventual consistency.
• Production experience with payment flows including authorization, capture, refunds, webhooks, and reconciliation.
• Experience with money-correctness patterns such as idempotency keys, double-entry thinking, and auditability.
• Strong security mindset covering PCI compliance, PII protection, secrets management, least privilege, and secure coding.
• Comfort working in an Azure-first environment with APIs, queues/eventing, and monitoring, plus strong CI/CD and automated testing practices.
• Clear communication with engineering and non-technical stakeholders during incidents, financial breaks, and compliance requests.
• Strong judgment when balancing delivery speed, standardization, technical debt, team capacity, and business priorities.

Nice to have

• Experience scaling or restructuring an engineering team during growth or organizational change.
• Experience with sub-merchant, marketplace, or Payfac-like operating models, including KYC, underwriting, settlements, and fee deductions.
• Familiarity with dispute tooling, card-scheme rules, 3DS/risk rules, or fraud platforms.
• Experience partnering with Legal, Compliance, or Finance leadership on regulatory or audit requirements.
