Head of Backend Engineering (Fintech)

What you will do

• Lead, grow, and hire a team of senior backend engineers while establishing ownership, accountability, and execution excellence.
• Set the technical vision and roadmap for the payments and fraud-prevention platform in collaboration with Product, BI, and Client (Unity).
• Drive architecture decisions for the next stage of platform growth and own business-critical systems end-to-end.
• Stay hands-on with system design, code reviews, and critical code paths while maintaining reliability, security, correctness, uptime, and auditability.
• Lead incident response and post-mortems to improve the system after production issues.
• Build AI tools and agents into design, coding, review, and incident investigation, and apply AI and machine learning to fraud detection, risk scoring, and payment operations.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience leading backend engineering teams, including hiring and growing engineers.
• Track record of raising a team's delivery and quality standards.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a deep backend background.
• Proven experience designing and operating real-time, high-scale distributed systems.
• Experience owning business-critical production systems where correctness, security, and uptime are non-negotiable.
• Strong hands-on experience with a major cloud provider, with AWS preferred; experience with Kubernetes, Node.js, TypeScript, Redis, and MySQL.
• Solid understanding of data modeling and caching, including MySQL and Redis.
• B.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Excellent English communication skills and the ability to earn trust with engineers, product, and senior stakeholders.
• Hands-on, extensive use of AI tools and agents in real production work, including decomposing tasks, providing context, verifying output, and leading team adoption of AI tooling.

Nice to have

• Experience with payments, fintech, or fraud-prevention systems.
• Experience applying machine learning or large language models to fraud or risk problems.
• Background in mobile gaming or large-scale B2C mobile platforms.
• Data-driven product experience with A/B tests, BI, and SQL analytics such as Snowflake.
