Senior Associate, Market Fundamentals & Transmission - West (Energy)

Location: San Diego, California, United States; hybrid office work on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Annual salary: $160,000–$190,000 USD, plus eligibility for an annual cash bonus based on personal and company performance.

What you will do

• Develop Western US power-market views covering energy, hub, resource adequacy, REC, and curtailment prices, capture ratios, ancillary services, capacity, transmission, load, generation, and fuel markets.
• Update short-term market fundamentals and quantify the impact of demand forecasts, planned and forced outages, transmission upgrades, generation buildout, and fuel prices on operating assets.
• Lead and support long-term fundamental market modeling across Western US power markets, including generation buildout, transmission upgrades, and load forecasts.
• Use modeling and data analytics to support risk management, trading, project development, greenfield siting, project financing, and M&A-related decisions.
• Validate external consultant market and transmission studies and maintain model input/output datasets.
• Automate data flows within modeling ecosystems using AI applications, Python, SQL, or Excel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Power, Economics, Business, or a comparable field.
• At least 4 years of experience in an analytical role at an energy trading firm, bank, independent power producer, ISO, or utility.
• Experience with power-market modeling, including zonal and capacity-expansion modeling, capacity/resource-adequacy and REC price forecasting, CAISO, WECC BAS, and Western market expansion.
• At least 3 years of production-cost modeling experience using tools such as Aurora, PROMOD, PLEXOS, or Encompass.
• Ability to formulate and communicate clear, persuasive, and succinct viewpoints in written and verbal formats.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent efforts and deliver accurate, high-quality work on time.
• Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, data-mining, and large-dataset skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, team-oriented environment with strong attention to detail and deadlines.

Nice to have

• Programming experience in Python and SQL.
• Strong understanding of zonal power-market fundamentals and WECC market dynamics.
• Renewable-energy background.
