Lead AI Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote, home based; role location listed as Oak Brook, Illinois, United States. Remote status and role location may change; relocation is not provided.

Salary: $115,300–$150,000 per year, with possible incentive and bonus opportunities.

What you will do

• Build and operate the enterprise AI platform, including semantic data, model and harness hosting, the AI gateway, and AI operations capabilities.
• Develop semantic request routing that selects LLMs, internal tools, or agentic pools using cost, latency, and privacy criteria.
• Partner with AI-Ops on monitoring, evaluation harnesses, quality and drift metrics, telemetry, and governance guardrails.
• Build secure, compliant AI integration patterns and production services for document intelligence, claims adjudication, conversational and voice self-service, call intelligence, fraud detection, anomaly detection, and regulatory monitoring.
• Scale agentic pipelines, multi-agent orchestration, reusable reference-architecture components, and feasibility prototypes from discovery through production.
• Evaluate AI workload economics, mentor engineers and consultants, lead learning sessions, participate in design reviews, and partner with security, risk, compliance, and data governance.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
• 7+ years building and operating production software, including 2+ years delivering production AI, LLM, or ML systems, with experience shipping components of an enterprise-scale platform.
• Experience building production agentic workflows as state machines with branching logic, retries, recovery paths, and controlled multi-step execution.
• Experience designing multi-agent systems, including role assignment, coordination, agent-to-agent conversations, and code execution loops.
• Deep fluency with AI-assisted development environments such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or ONA, including team adoption and impact measurement.
• Experience with semantic routing, model orchestration, embeddings-based intent analysis, deterministic fallback logic, and policy-based provider selection.
• API and integration experience with REST, event-driven, and MCP patterns, including systems of record and workflow platforms.
• Experience with observability and AI-Ops for non-deterministic systems, security-aware engineering with PII and sensitive data, model hosting and serving, evaluation and reliability engineering, and data engineering foundations for AI.
• Technical leadership without formal authority, including architecture decision records, design reviews, mentoring, clear trade-off communication, roadmap delivery, stakeholder management, and incremental production delivery.

Nice to have

• Financial services, healthcare benefits, or other regulated-industry experience; HSA/FSA, claims, custody, or payments exposure is especially valuable.
• Knowledge of NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, model risk management, SOC 2, or HIPAA control environments.
• Rapid prototyping, feasibility assessment, R&D, innovation, technical learning facilitation, or engineering pairing experience.
• Document intelligence and intelligent document processing, including OCR, extraction, classification, and measured accuracy targets.
• Decisioning and adjudication systems with reviewed, audited machine decisions and accuracy or turnaround standards.
• Conversational and voice AI, including chat deflection, speech-to-text, call transcription, summarization, and authenticated account-specific responses.
• Fraud, anomaly, and identity signal detection, including behavioral baselines, graph analytics, and detection of doctored or AI-generated media.
• Experience with workflow and low-code automation platforms.
