Staff Software Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Lead multi-quarter initiatives involving several engineering teams, from initial scoping through production.
• Write exemplar code for critical paths and review important designs, balancing quality, speed, reliability, and maintainability.
• Define operational standards for monitoring, availability, scalability, security, release safety, and cost awareness; help lead serious incidents and implement fixes.
• Lead tool evaluations and architecture migrations, making build-versus-buy trade-offs explicit.
• Own business outcomes by defining success metrics, monitoring launches, and challenging work that will not improve merchant results.
• Mentor Senior Engineers and below, participate in senior-level interviews, and maintain architecture documentation, decision records, and runbooks.

Requirements

• Significant production software experience, typically 8+ years, including leading complex cross-team initiatives.
• Deep expertise in TypeScript/JavaScript and Node.js, including REST and/or GraphQL API architecture and distributed systems.
• Ability to work outside the primary language and stack; Staff Engineers are expected to be T-shaped.
• Strong relational database, data modelling, and SQL skills, plus familiarity with NoSQL.
• Experience designing reliable and scalable cloud systems, with solid CI/CD, observability, and incident-response practices.
• Hands-on LLM or agentic-systems experience, or a record of quickly adopting and applying new technology sensibly.
• Daily use of AI coding tools, with judgment about when to trust them and when to reject their output.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs in business terms.
• Team-oriented ownership mindset: bring solutions with problems and ensure work is live and stable.
