Biosafety Manager

Location: Palo Alto, CA

Salary: $127,000–$157,000 base salary annually, plus eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus and Compound Cash Grant Program.

What you will do

• Establish and lead the Biosafety Program and Institutional Biosafety Committee operations, ensuring oversight of biological agent usage.
• Serve as the biosafety subject matter expert for researchers and represent Arc to local, state, and federal authorities.
• Review protocols involving biohazards or potentially biohazardous materials, guide researchers through pre-review, and manage approvals and renewals.
• Validate compliance through site inspections, biological use authorization follow-up, risk assessments, audits, and laboratory walkthroughs.
• Provide guidance on biosafety requirements, permitting, biological material shipping, material transfer agreements, training, manuals, and emergency spill response.
• Support general EH&S programs, including chemical, radiation, environmental, hazardous waste, equipment, incident investigation, and employee safety activities.

Requirements

• 5+ years of laboratory experience, including 3+ years in EH&S and biosafety, with a strong grounding in virology or microbiological sciences.
• Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biology, microbiology, occupational safety and health, or a related field.
• Expert knowledge of biosafety and laboratory safety practices, including biosafety cabinet operation, fume hoods and ventilation, PPE, and chemical safety and storage.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and accurately.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize resources, influence group behaviors positively, and build consensus on safety practices.
• Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work independently with minimal oversight and as part of a dynamic team.
• Interest in learning new techniques, maintaining accurate records, following instructions, and complying with company policies.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in a biological, life science, or related field.
• Certification as a Biosafety Professional (CBSP), Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
• Knowledge and experience in Animal Research Occupational Health and Safety.
• Experience conducting research with laboratory animals involving biohazardous or hazardous materials.
