Business Banking Senior Underwriter I (Commercial Credit)

Location: Hybrid position in Buffalo, New York, United States of America.

Salary: $74,600–$124,400 annual (USD).

What you will do

• Evaluate, structure, underwrite, and manage credit risks for new Business Banking transactions and ongoing portfolio exposures.
• Analyze financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, collateral, guarantor support, credit quality, risk ratings, and policy compliance.
• Monitor credit continuously, identify emerging or deteriorating risks, and recommend restructuring, modifications, or other mitigation strategies.
• Facilitate deal screening between 1st Line of Defense and 2nd Line of Defense Credit, recommending risk mitigants and implementing enhancements.
• Partner with Relationship Managers and Sales teams throughout the deal lifecycle, while supporting process improvement, projects, and working groups.
• Provide training and guidance to junior underwriters and business partners; maintain internal controls, regulatory standards, audit actions, and escalation procedures.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of commercial or business banking credit underwriting experience, or 7 years of combined higher education and/or work experience including at least 7 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
• Strong ability to analyze financial statements, tax returns, and cash flow.
• Demonstrated ability to support the underwriting and management of commercial credit relationships.
• Ability to develop and support credit recommendations, communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and negotiate or mediate compromises across credit and sales teams.
• Self-motivated and able to manage workload and make independent decisions with minimal oversight in a fast-paced environment, including decisions with imperfect information.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
• Ability to support moderately complex credits and exposures up to $3MM independently and larger relationships above $3MM in partnership with 2nd Line of Defense Senior Credit Officers, with approval authority commensurate with experience and responsibilities.
