Senior Data Scientist (NLP & Applied AI)

What you will do

• Design and build production NLP enrichment pipelines for scientific full-text at scale, extracting entities, classifications, claims, and summaries.
• Compare classical NLP, embedding-based retrieval, LLM prompting, and fine-tuned smaller models, selecting approaches based on evaluation, cost, and operational tradeoffs.
• Build golden evaluation sets with subject-matter experts and vendors, select metrics, and balance speed, quality, and cost.
• Contribute to agentic AI applications that use tools and reason over enriched scientific corpora.
• Work with editors, product managers, and engineers to translate modeling insights and stakeholder feedback into product improvements.
• Write production code, own model evaluations, ship changes, and remain accountable for outcomes.

Requirements

• Strong experience with both modern NLP approaches, including LLMs, transformers, embeddings, and retrieval, and classical approaches, including NER, classification, and sequence labeling.
• Experience building evaluations and using results to improve modeling decisions.
• Strong Python skills across exploratory notebooks and production repositories.
• Ability to compare approaches, select the right method for each task, justify choices with evaluations and cost estimates, and respond to performance drift.

Nice to have

• Experience working with scientific or scholarly text.
• Familiarity with AWS services including S3, Batch, Lambda, and SageMaker.
• Familiarity with Parquet or Iceberg data lake patterns.
• Experience running LLMs in production under cost and latency budgets.
• Exposure to agentic AI applications, including tool use, multi-step reasoning, guardrails, and trajectory evaluation.
