Staff Software Engineer - Platform (Go/Redpanda)

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end architecture and two-to-three-year technical direction of the Redpanda-based event streaming platform, including the UTS ecosystem, client libraries, and user-facing streaming.
• Lead the transition from batch to event-driven systems across the organization and define standards for schema evolution, topic ownership, replay, idempotency, versioning, and deprecation.
• Design realtime streaming at scale, including connection fan-out, slow consumers, backpressure, ordering, delivery guarantees, and failure handling during volatile market conditions.
• Shape authentication and authorization where identity meets streaming, including realtime subscription authorization, token lifecycles, and multi-tenant isolation.
• Partner with SRE and QA on chaos testing, game days, test tooling, pre-production gates, and resilience verification; participate in on-call and lead incidents affecting shared infrastructure.
• Lead through influence by writing RFCs, reviewing designs, mentoring engineers, and growing technical capability across teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional engineering experience, including several years running systems at real scale. Strong Go experience is required, or deep experience in another strongly typed language with the ability to learn Go quickly.
• Production architecture experience with event streaming systems such as Kafka or Redpanda, including partitioning, consumer groups, rebalancing, retention, and delivery guarantees under load.
• Experience delivering realtime data to clients at scale using WebSockets, SSE, or gRPC streaming, including fan-out, slow consumers, and backpressure.
• Experience driving technical direction across team boundaries without formal authority, including owning decisions and writing RFCs.
• Experience building or maintaining shared libraries used by multiple teams, with a practical understanding of backward compatibility and deprecation costs.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and improving the teams around you.
• Deep expertise in at least one adjacent area: identity and access, developer tooling and CI, or testing and resilience; curiosity about the others.
• Working knowledge of Kubernetes beyond the basics, including writing Helm charts and understanding security best practices; relevant job experience or certifications are required.
• Experience with relational databases; PostgreSQL is used, but equivalent fundamentals are acceptable.
• Previous startup experience, including working effectively in ambiguity, adapting to changing priorities, balancing technical debt with speed, and proactively handling undocumented work.

Nice to have

• Experience with IDL or binary serialization formats such as Protobuf, Avro, or FlatBuffers, including schema evolution across many consumers.
• Experience with change data capture, such as Debezium or PeerDB, and PostgreSQL logical replication.
• Experience with OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT lifecycle, Keycloak, or Cognito, especially for long-lived connections or machine-to-machine access.
• Experience building agentic or AI-native developer tooling or systems operated by agents.
• Experience with chaos engineering, game days, load testing, or fault-injection testing.
• Infrastructure as code experience with Argo CD or Terraform.
• Experience with Grafana observability tools, including Prometheus and Tempo.
• Experience in fintech or another regulated domain and understanding of how compliance constraints shape architecture.
