Senior Software Engineer, Back end (Opal Platform)

What you will do

• Design, build, test, and document Python REST and GraphQL APIs, microservices, and client packages for quantum software products.
• Translate Product team stories written as AS A, WHEN, THEN specifications into working software.
• Use AI coding assistants and agentic workflows for implementation, test generation, refactoring, and documentation while owning shipped quality.
• Evaluate AI tools, create prompts and guardrails, and share effective practices with the team.
• Review pull requests, including AI-generated code, and improve distributed-system reliability, performance, and security.
• Mentor teammates and share knowledge openly.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, including 3+ years of Python experience.
• Strong experience building web APIs with REST and GraphQL using Django or FastAPI.
• Fluency with AI tools in the development workflow and sound judgment about when to trust, verify, or override them.
• Experience with OIDC/OAuth2; the platform uses Keycloak.
• Sound testing practices, including BDD, automated tests, and CI/CD.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to communicate with different internal audiences.
• Comfort moving quickly with thought and empathy in a scaleup environment.
• A degree in computer science or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience building with LLMs, agents, or MCP.
• Experience with microservices and distributed systems, including Ray and RabbitMQ.
• Curiosity about quantum computing; no physics background is required.
