Head of Legal (AI)

Location: Remote; hire regardless of location with significant hours overlap with one of the Americas time zones.

Salary: $260,000–$325,000 USD for CA, WA, NY, NJ, and CT; $220,000–$275,000 USD for all other US states.

What you will do

• Lead all legal functions, including product, privacy, commercial, corporate, employment, intellectual property, regulatory, and litigation matters.
• Set public positions on children's technology, AI interactions with children, online play, and monetization of children's products.
• Develop privacy practices and pursue seals and certifications that influence parents and school districts.
• Partner early with product, engineering, and partnerships to identify shippable solutions, resolve showstoppers, and accelerate decisions.
• Create contract, data agreement, partnership, and vendor-deal playbooks; manage outside counsel and improve legal work with AI.
• Lead the in-house legal team and oversee M&A, financings, and board matters with the CFO.

Requirements

• Experience leading legal at a consumer technology company of 100 to 1,000 people where product and engineering create most of the value.
• Ownership of privacy for a consumer product, ideally a children's product, covering COPPA, FERPA, state student privacy laws, CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, and emerging AI rules.
• Experience running M&A, financings, and board work alongside a CFO.
• Experience leading talent-dense teams and managing several outside law firms to budget and quality standards.
• Experience rebuilding legal work with AI and explaining how a small team can match the output of a much larger legal function.
• Ability to turn complex problems into a small number of important decisions, communicate concisely, take ownership of decisions, and adapt when facts change.
• Ability to move quickly while maintaining rigor and sound judgment.

Nice to have

• 10+ years in law, ideally including child-directed products or student data.
• Experience in strategy consulting, operating, finance, or engineering.
• Experience improving an existing legal function or leading a distributed team.
• Ability to communicate effectively with regulators, reporters, and partners.
