QA Engineer (Java, Automation)

Location: Hybrid, with the office for this role in London; offices are also available in Cambridge and Leeds. Most people are expected to attend the office at least twice per month. Applicants must already have the full right to work in the UK for the full duration of the contract. No visa sponsorship is available.

What you will do

• Design, develop, maintain, and execute Java-based automated test frameworks and suites using Selenium and RestAssured.
• Create and execute automated UI, API, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests, alongside manual testing where required.
• Improve unit, integration, API, and end-to-end coverage while promoting shift-left quality practices across the SDLC.
• Review requirements and acceptance criteria, create Gherkin test scenarios, and maintain traceability across tests, defects, execution results, and evidence.
• Support CI/CD pipelines, manage test data, validate data across systems and databases, and maintain test documentation and quality reports.
• Investigate defects, support root cause analysis, participate in Agile ceremonies and peer reviews, and collaborate with Product Managers, Software Engineers, SMEs, and QA colleagues.

Requirements

• Strong commercial experience in Java test automation, including designing, developing, and maintaining automated frameworks and test suites with Selenium and RestAssured.
• Experience automating both UI and API testing using Java-based frameworks.
• Good understanding of software testing principles, the SDLC, Agile development, and quality engineering, with experience in functional, regression, integration, API, and end-to-end testing.
• Experience with requirements and acceptance-criteria review, Gherkin test cases using Given/When/Then, test design, planning, execution, defect management, and complete traceability.
• Experience creating and maintaining test plans, test cases, test scripts, test reports, test evidence, and other quality documentation.
• Experience working in Agile squads and collaborating with Product Managers, Software Engineers, SMEs, and QA colleagues.
• Experience using Jira, Confluence, Git, and other software delivery and quality management tools, including executing tests in CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience managing test data, validating data across systems and databases, and using SQL to extract and validate database data.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to articulate risks, issues, and quality recommendations.
• ISTQB Foundation Certification or an equivalent software testing qualification.

Nice to have

• Experience in a regulated environment such as healthcare, NHS, genomics, medical devices, life sciences, or another highly governed industry.
• Experience with AWS, cloud-native applications, distributed-system testing, Playwright, Cypress, PACT, Python automation, WireMock, BrowserStack, Jira Xray, accessibility testing, Axe Core, OWASP ZAP, security testing, FHIR, performance testing, and non-functional testing.
• Knowledge of secure software testing practices, accessibility standards, healthcare interoperability standards, CI/CD practices, and test automation framework design.
