Senior Software Engineer (Elasticsearch, Scala)

Location: Remote from Georgia, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Poland, or Ukraine.

What you will do

• Build, maintain, and integrate backend services powering food search and logging across the broader engineering organization.
• Perform end-to-end Elasticsearch performance tuning, including data design, indexing, query evaluation, and iterative optimization.
• Evaluate and implement search and data technologies that improve result quality and user experience.
• Collaborate with senior search engineers, product management, and leadership on solution discovery, experiment planning, and delivery.
• Develop tools, processes, and metrics for measuring and monitoring search quality, including conversion rates, time to log, query abandonment, and result relevance.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience with Elasticsearch performance tuning, query analysis, and relevance optimization at scale.
• Strong understanding of index design, mapping strategies, cluster management, and scoring and ranking mechanics.
• Familiarity with high availability, disaster recovery, and operational monitoring for Elasticsearch clusters, including deploying indexes or clusters for load balancing and experimentation.
• Ability to translate product specifications into technical requirements and deploy ranking and relevance experiments with defined success criteria and metrics.
• Strong experience writing, shipping, and maintaining Scala services in production; Scala is the primary language.
• Comfort working with SQL and Python.
• First-hand experience building, scaling, and supporting large-scale data infrastructure systems in production.
• Strong understanding of database design, data architecture, and performance tuning across multiple data stores such as MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis, or similar; experience with high-volume messaging systems such as Kafka; and familiarity with AWS, GCP, or other cloud platforms.
• Strong peer code review practices.
• Active production use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or comparable AI-powered coding environments beyond autocomplete.
• Familiarity with agentic coding workflows including code generation, refactoring, debugging, and test authoring, with the ability to explain where human judgment remains critical.
