Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Design and build scalable backend services in Python and TypeScript for AI-powered products.
• Own API contracts, versioning, data models, migrations, query performance, and MCP tool surfaces used by AI agents.
• Build asynchronous and event-driven execution with workflows, queues, scheduled jobs, and resilient upstream data-fetching layers.
• Integrate LLMs and agent runtimes into production services with deterministic, testable boundaries.
• Lead architecture, code quality, testing, observability, security, reliability, and technical decision-making.
• Own services in production, including CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes deployments, debugging, and collaboration with product, design, frontend, and data/AI teams.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience building and operating production services at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Python with FastAPI or an equivalent async framework, or Node.js/TypeScript with NestJS, with willingness to work in both.
• Experience designing scalable backend architectures, clear service boundaries, and reusable data models.
• Deep understanding of API design, authentication and authorization flows, distributed-system tradeoffs, asynchronous and concurrent programming, and long-running or distributed execution.
• Experience with relational or analytical databases, including schema design, migrations, and query optimization; experience with PostgreSQL at scale or OLAP/columnar engines such as Athena, Firebolt, BigQuery, Snowflake, or ClickHouse.
• Strong understanding of performance, reliability, security, testing methodologies, and observability tooling including metrics, structured logs, and distributed tracing.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Production experience integrating LLM or model APIs into backend services and addressing latency, failure modes, cost, and non-deterministic output.
• Hands-on daily use of AI development tools, ability to validate and improve AI-generated code, understanding of prompt engineering for engineering workflows, and strong product, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Enough frontend fluency in React and TypeScript to reason about API consumers without owning the UI.

Nice to have

• Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, the Model Context Protocol, Temporal, Airflow, or Step Functions.
• Experience with data platforms, analytics products, or BI tools.
