Mechanical Engineer (Consumer Electronics)

Location: San Francisco, CA, US; hybrid arrangements are acceptable, with regular hands-on prototype and lab collaboration.

Salary: $139,400–$205,000 USD annual base salary, localized according to work location, plus potential equity grants.

What you will do

• Define product requirements and features from customer needs and business priorities, balancing user experience, performance, cost, reliability, and development time.
• Build connected consumer and enterprise devices, including SmartScale, lockers, POS systems, and hardware for automation and robotics applications.
• Create CAD models, drawings, specifications, physical prototypes, and pilot designs while selecting suitable materials, components, and fabrication methods.
• Apply mechanical fundamentals, tolerance analysis, simulations, and physical testing to validate designs and address key risks.
• Integrate mechanical systems with electronics, sensors, and firmware, debugging issues across disciplines.
• Lead mechanical engineering activities with suppliers and manufacturing partners during NPI, including build-quality investigations and corrective actions.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience taking physical products or subsystems from incomplete requirements through mechanical design, prototyping, debugging, and testing.
• Strong fundamentals in materials and process selection, fit and tolerances, assembly, and practical reliability.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or an equivalent mechanical CAD package, including creation of supplier-ready drawings and specifications.
• Experience collaborating with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Ability to work independently through ambiguity, prioritize work, and communicate technical decisions and risks clearly.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with production launches, NPI, design for manufacturing and assembly, tooling, reliability testing, or field failure analysis.
• Experience in a startup, small hardware team, or cross-disciplinary environment.
• Basic electrical engineering, firmware, or programming skills for integrated prototype development and debugging.
• Experience with electromechanical products, mechanisms, enclosures, sensors, or merchant-facing hardware.
