Senior Research Engineer (AI)

Location: Austin, Texas, United States; hybrid work model

What you will do

• Design, prototype, and ship AI features including prompts, agents, tool integrations, and retrieval.
• Build multi-step agent workflows, evaluation frameworks, golden datasets, and automated prompt-optimization pipelines.
• Monitor and improve model quality, latency, and cost in production using evaluations and telemetry.
• Implement guardrails, safety checks, fallback behavior, and debugging workflows for AI systems.
• Evaluate retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, and other model adaptation techniques for product needs.
• Partner with product, design, Platform, and AI Scientist teams while mentoring junior AI Engineers.

Requirements

• Computer Science degree with a Machine Learning specialization, or equivalent professional depth.
• 5+ years of direct experience building AI/ML-powered systems.
• Hands-on experience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering, agent frameworks, tool calling, retrieval, embeddings, and evaluation practices.
• Experience designing evaluation frameworks, automated prompt-optimization pipelines, guardrails, and safety checks.
• Strong understanding of model behavior, training versus inference, failure modes, and operational tradeoffs including latency, cost, and context limits.
• Experience shipping user-facing AI features end-to-end and mentoring or leading engineers.

• Experience fine-tuning or adapting models for product use cases.
• Customer-facing or embedded product engineering experience.
• Experience in healthcare, biotech, regulated, or other high-stakes industries.
