Staff Platform Engineer (Quantum Computing)

Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom. Working pattern: Hybrid; the role is based in the Oxford office and includes on-site work with quantum system hardware.

What you will do

• Run and evolve Kubernetes platforms for quantum systems using k3s, ArgoCD, and Helm.
• Improve CI/CD reliability and speed, including GitHub Actions, hardware-in-the-loop runners, FPGA build runners, and build caches.
• Build dashboards and alerts as code for quantum hardware, including lasers, cryogenics, and vacuum systems, using Grafana and OpenTelemetry.
• Provide ready-to-use remote development environments for engineers and physicists working with quantum system hardware.
• Maintain secure, recoverable, reproducible, and reviewable on-site and cloud infrastructure using OpenTofu and Atmos.
• Lead strategic platform projects, technical decisions, runbook creation, and safe rollout of platform changes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in Platform, DevOps, or Site Reliability roles running Linux systems in production.
• Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, Terraform or OpenTofu, Kubernetes, and CI/CD.
• Experience building and improving CI/CD pipelines, ideally with GitHub Actions.
• Experience with production observability and security, including monitoring, alerting, secrets, and access control.
• Ability to diagnose failures across storage, pipelines, development environments, and the wider infrastructure stack.
• Ability to lead work from design through rollout and write Python, shell, and OpenTofu.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI coding tools.
• Interest in quantum computing; prior quantum computing experience is not required.
• Experience with both on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
