TL;DR
Senior Firmware Engineer (Robotics): Building deterministic, production-ready embedded firmware for autonomous heavy machinery with an accent on real-time control, hardware interfaces, and safety-critical reliability. Focus on designing low-level drivers and hardware abstraction layers, leading hardware bring-up, and solving observability, fault tolerance, and fleet-scale deployment challenges.

Location: Seattle, United States

Company

hirify.global builds autonomous heavy machinery by combining software, hardware, robotics, and mission-critical infrastructure for real-world jobsites.

What you will do

  • Design and implement embedded C++ firmware for the Generation 2 hardware platform.
  • Develop low-level drivers, hardware abstraction layers, system services, and interfaces for sensors, actuators, ECUs, and communication buses.
  • Build deterministic real-time and near-real-time control paths with robust error handling, watchdogs, and fail-safe mechanisms.
  • Lead firmware bring-up for new boards and collaborate with Electrical and Mechanical Engineering on integration and validation.
  • Implement telemetry, logging, debugging, firmware updates, and fleet-scale observability.
  • Mentor engineers and improve firmware architecture, CI/CD workflows, testing frameworks, and reliability practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 5+ years of professional firmware or embedded systems development experience.
  • Strong C++ experience in embedded or systems programming environments.
  • Experience with microcontrollers or embedded Linux and protocols including CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, and Ethernet.
  • Strong debugging skills across hardware and software boundaries, with experience delivering production-quality systems.
  • Experience designing for reliability, safety, real-world deployment, and cross-functional integration.

Nice to have

  • Experience with safety-critical, real-time, robotics, autonomy, or heavy equipment systems.
  • Familiarity with RTOS, real-time scheduling, hardware bring-up, and board-level debugging.
  • Experience with OTA updates, bootloaders, secure updates, embedded observability, HIL testing, or hardware test automation.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on firmware that directly controls autonomous heavy machinery in real-world environments.
  • Ownership of the Generation 2 hardware platform and collaboration across hardware, software, autonomy, and field operations.
  • Competitive compensation and equity.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), and life insurance.
  • Travel opportunities to jobsites across the United States and globally.
