Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco or Toronto; the San Francisco role requires three days per week in the office.

Salary: CA$160,000–CA$215,000 in Toronto or $185,000–$250,000 in San Francisco, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, build, and optimize backend systems supporting LLM-based algorithms, products, and internal platforms.
• Own infrastructure and services for reliable deployment, experimentation, monitoring, and iteration of AI-powered systems.
• Lead projects across the full lifecycle, from architecture and design through deployment and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with data scientists, researchers, and engineering teams to gather requirements and deliver reusable platform solutions.
• Influence the technical direction and long-term architecture of the AI platform.
• Maintain high standards for reliability, performance, observability, and maintainability.

Requirements

• Extensive experience building frameworks, libraries, distributed systems, and production infrastructure.
• Proficiency with Python or another programming language such as Go, Java, or C++.
• Experience building production-ready RESTful APIs and managing infrastructure.
• Experience owning and delivering complex technical projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience collaborating across disciplines.
• Experience in startup or high-growth environments with an emphasis on speed, collaboration, and ownership.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI systems, LLMs, or machine learning infrastructure.
• Background in legal technology or social-impact products.
• Experience supporting internal platforms or developer-facing tools.
