Employment Counsel (AI)

Location: San Mateo, United States; hybrid

Salary: $355,000–$400,000 annually, plus equity

What you will do

• Advise on hiring, terminations, worker classifications, leave, accommodations, investigations, policies, and other employment and labor matters.
• Partner with HR and People Operations as a day-to-day legal advisor.
• Advise on employee equity and compensation matters.
• Build scalable employment policies, templates, and processes for a rapidly growing, multi-state workforce.
• Support international expansion and cross-border employment law compliance.
• Manage employment disputes and coordinate specialist outside counsel.

Requirements

• 9+ years of in-house employment and labor law experience.
• JD degree and membership in at least one US state bar.
• Experience partnering closely with HR and People Operations teams.
• Experience with employee equity and compensation considerations.
• Experience supporting international expansion and navigating global employment laws.
• Startup or hypergrowth experience, with a pragmatic build-from-scratch mindset and ability to use AI tools to improve workflows.
