Senior Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid with two days per week in the San Francisco office

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate production AI agents using tools, retrieval, and multi-step reasoning for end-to-end healthcare workflows.
• Develop agent orchestration, tracing, failure recovery, and confidence-based routing to human reviewers.
• Fine-tune and post-train LLMs and vision-language models using supervised fine-tuning, preference optimization, and distillation.
• Build versioned labeled, golden, and synthetic datasets and create evaluation harnesses, automated graders, and regression suites.
• Instrument production systems with tracing, drift detection, and failure taxonomies, feeding findings back into training data.
• Maintain reproducible MLOps releases with Docker, Kubernetes, MLflow or equivalent, and CI/CD while following HIPAA and security practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years building and shipping software or ML systems, including 2+ years with LLM-based systems in production.
• Strong Python, PyTorch, and Hugging Face Transformers experience.
• Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as LangGraph, RAG, and vector search platforms such as Pinecone.
• Experience fine-tuning LLMs or VLMs and measuring model improvements with reliable evaluation methods.
• Experience with large-scale datasets, databases, data pipelines, traditional ML, and production evaluation systems.
• Ability to work in a hybrid model with two days per week in the San Francisco office.

Nice to have

• Healthcare data experience with EHR, FHIR, claims, or prior authorization workflows.
• Document AI or vision model experience.
• Experience serving and training models at scale with vLLM, FSDP, or DeepSpeed.
• Experience working in another regulated, high-stakes domain.
