Staff Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote or hybrid, based in the United States or United Kingdom, with hubs in New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C., and London.

Salary: $205,000–$240,000 USD annual base salary, with equity and possible bonus or variable compensation.

What you will do

• Define the architecture and technical roadmap for agentic systems processing shipments, customs declarations, invoices, bills of lading, and other trade data in real time.
• Lead reliable, cost-efficient pipelines covering ingestion, document understanding, entity resolution, inference, and model routing.
• Fine-tune and post-train language models using SFT, DPO, reinforcement learning, analyst feedback, production outcomes, and agent traces.
• Build evaluation, tracing, observability, and feedback systems that identify regressions and improve deployed models.
• Mentor senior engineers, raise engineering standards, and help shape ML hiring and leveling.
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, product managers, and customers to turn complex problems into shipped capabilities.

Requirements

• BS/MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of experience building and shipping production ML systems, including recent LLM-powered products.
• Deep expertise in PyTorch and the modern Python ML stack, including Hugging Face, scikit-learn, NumPy, and Pandas or Polars.
• Production experience with RAG, tool and function calling, structured outputs, agentic workflows, and LLM post-training.
• Experience designing evaluation suites, golden datasets, LLM-as-judge pipelines, and production observability.
• Strong written and verbal communication, engineering judgment, and experience balancing model cost, latency, and accuracy.

Nice to have

• Multi-agent systems and agent tooling such as LangGraph.
• Hybrid retrieval, vector search, rerankers, and embedding fine-tuning.
• Vision-language models for trade document understanding and multilingual NLP.
• LLMOps tools such as MLflow, Databricks Mosaic AI, and AI guardrails.
• Experience with safety, auditability, or regulated and high-stakes AI applications.
