Principal Applied AI Engineer (Healthcare)

Location: Palo Alto, United States — hybrid

Salary: $230,000–$280,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Define multi-year technical strategy and architecture for agentic workflow infrastructure supporting more than 100 product workflows.
• Represent applied AI engineering in product direction, build-versus-buy, and platform investment decisions.
• Set engineering standards for LLM evaluation, deployment, safety, monitoring, and AI governance.
• Serve as a technical escalation point for complex, high-ambiguity problems across product lines.
• Evaluate emerging models, frameworks, and techniques, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Mistral offerings.
• Mentor Staff-level engineers and shape the technical career ladder for applied AI roles.

Requirements

• Deep software engineering foundation with Python required.
• 8+ years of production software experience, including 4+ years building and scaling AI-powered or LLM-driven applications in production.
• Experience setting technical direction and standards adopted across multiple teams.
• Deep expertise in MLOps, model deployment, and workflow automation at an organizational or platform level.
• Ability to operate autonomously on ambiguous, high-stakes technical and strategic problems and influence leadership-level decisions.
• Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of experience, or a master’s degree with 8 years of experience, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• Recognized expertise in applied AI or agentic systems through talks, publications, open source, or platform-level roles.
• Experience building AI infrastructure in a regulated or high-stakes domain such as healthcare or finance.
• Experience founding or scaling a technical function in a startup environment.
• Experience mentoring Staff-level engineers and shaping technical career ladders.
