Principal Test Automation Engineer (AI)

Location: Santa Clara, California or remote within the United States; hybrid work

Salary: $195,000–$285,000 annually, plus bonus and incentive opportunities

What you will do

• Set the technical direction for AI-enabled automation across build, CI, testing, and release workflows.
• Build an agent harness and integrations with GitLab, Jira, test results, logs, and observability data.
• Develop evaluation methods to measure time savings, correctness, and the impact of nondeterministic automations.
• Define guardrails, autonomy boundaries, engineering standards, and auditability requirements for AI-driven changes.
• Deliver quality-engineering automations for failure attribution, failure clustering, defect deduplication, coverage-gap analysis, and release-readiness summaries.
• Establish shared engineering patterns through design reviews and mentoring.

Requirements

• Extensive production software engineering experience with strong Python skills.
• Working experience with Rust and/or C++ sufficient to understand build flows and diagnose compiler errors.
• Production experience shipping AI-enabled tools or automation used by other engineers.
• Hands-on experience with LLM APIs, agent harnesses, tool integration, and context engineering.
• Experience with CI/CD, testing, release processes, and evaluations for nondeterministic systems.
• Experience setting technical direction across teams and choosing appropriately between AI agents, deterministic tools, and scripts.

Nice to have

• Experience with compilers, firmware, or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
• Experience with MCP or similar integration protocols.
• Experience with GitLab, Jira, or Prometheus APIs.
• Experience managing cost and latency in LLM-based systems.
• Daily use of Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar AI coding tools.
