Senior Optical Engineer (Optical Fiber Sensing)

What you will do

• Own end-to-end optical fiber sensing architectures, including system requirements, architecture decisions, interface definitions, performance budgets, and technical roadmaps.
• Design and integrate sensing solutions across coherent modems, optical line systems, telemetry, timing and synchronization, data transport, signal processing, analytics, and application interfaces.
• Define performance metrics and specifications, develop link and noise budgets, analyze trade-offs, and validate designs through modeling, simulation, laboratory experiments, and field trials.
• Lead technical work from concept through implementation, verification, deployment, and lifecycle support, including design reviews, risk management, root-cause analysis, and issue resolution.
• Plan laboratory and field investigations using instrumentation, data acquisition, signal analysis, and performance characterization.
• Collaborate with hardware, modem, software, systems, product, solutions engineering, services, and customer teams.

Requirements

• Graduate or post-graduate degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related discipline.
• 5+ years of experience with optical fiber sensing, signal processing, data analysis, and performance characterization.
• Experience owning complex system designs through requirements definition, architecture, modeling, prototyping, verification, integration, optimization, and deployment.
• Knowledge of fiber-optic propagation, coherent optical systems, noise and impairments, optical amplification, optical switching, polarization effects, and digital communications.
• Experimental optical engineering experience with laboratory setup, optical alignment, calibration, uncertainty analysis, and test instrumentation.
• Experience using MATLAB and Python for models, analysis workflows, and engineering tools.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed fiber-optic sensing, coherent sensing, photonics, or optical communications.
• Experience architecting sensing solutions using coherent transponders or optical line-system telemetry.
• Experience with laboratory or field trials, customer demonstrations, optical modeling tools, or telecom-fiber deployments.
• Knowledge of distributed acoustic, phase, strain, vibration, or environmental sensing.
• Experience with embedded systems, telemetry pipelines, microservices, cloud or edge analytics, APIs, distributed-system optimization, or generative AI in engineering workflows.
