Senior Manager, Payroll (AI)

Location: On-site in San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, or Boston, United States

Salary: $172,800–$221,000 annually in San Francisco; compensation includes base pay and a portion of variable compensation.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end US payroll processing and ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payments.
• Manage multi-state payroll tax compliance, adjustments, audits, and federal, state, and local filings.
• Partner with HR, Accounting, Legal, and other functions on 401(k), HSA, FSA, RSU, and payroll-related deductions.
• Lead payroll general ledger reconciliations, month-end close support, and employment tax reporting.
• Design payroll controls, document processes, and improve systems and automation for scalable operations.
• Supervise and develop the lead payroll specialist.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of US payroll experience, including 3+ years managing payroll staff.
• In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local employment requirements and multi-state payroll tax.
• Hands-on experience with Workday Payroll and ADP SmartCompliance.
• Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including complex formulas and analysis of large datasets.
• Ability to work in an office in San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, or Boston.

Nice to have

• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC).
• Experience designing payroll controls and supporting internal or external audits.
• Experience automating payroll processes while maintaining accuracy and control.
• Experience with RSU payroll tax and reporting.
• Experience in a SaaS or technology company, including payroll integration for acquired companies.
