2027 Summer Intern, AI Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Reston, Virginia, United States, with office attendance twice per week. This is a 10-week internship expected to run from June through August; housing and relocation assistance are not provided.

Pay range: $37,855–$77,869 based on full-time employment.

What you will do

• Collaborate with technical, data, security, business, and program stakeholders to translate needs into practical AI solutions.
• Write, test, and maintain code and scripts for data processing, AI applications, integrations, automation, validation, and reporting.
• Prepare, clean, validate, transform, and evaluate structured and unstructured datasets.
• Prototype AI-enabled workflows using approved models, APIs, cloud services, low-code tools, and automation technologies.
• Create test cases, evaluate outputs, identify errors and limitations, and support privacy, security, governance, and human-review practices.
• Document technical work through runbooks, demonstrations, analyses, and presentations while tracking progress and incorporating feedback.

Requirements

• At least 30 completed college credit hours by the start date in computer science, data science, information systems, engineering, analytics, cybersecurity, or a related field.
• Programming or scripting experience with Python, PowerShell, JavaScript, SQL, or comparable languages.
• Experience with technical projects involving coding, data, artificial intelligence, automation, cloud technology, or systems work.
• Familiarity with databases, data schemas, data pipelines, ETL processes, JSON, and YAML.
• Knowledge of AI and machine learning concepts, APIs, cloud platforms, version control, data privacy, information security, and AI governance.
• Strong analytical, communication, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently and collaborate with distributed cross-functional teams.

Nice to have

• Completed bachelor's degree or enrollment in a related graduate program.
• Exposure to large language models, agentic workflows, computer vision, natural language processing, or model evaluation.
• Familiarity with Azure, Power Platform, Power BI, Git, Claude Code, or other enterprise data and workflow tools.
