AVP, Underwriting & Strategic Pricing (Health Insurance)

Location: Hybrid Flex - Durham, United States

Salary: $231,295–$370,073 annually, plus annual incentive bonus and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead underwriting and strategic pricing for the Commercial Employer market across fully insured and self-funded products.
• Develop strategies that balance membership growth, competitiveness, customer retention, affordability, and financial performance.
• Oversee risk assessment, rate development, underwriting governance, pricing methodologies, and underwriting systems.
• Analyze market trends, profitability drivers, and business performance to support strategic recommendations.
• Lead forecasting, financial planning, process improvement, automation, analytics, and operational excellence initiatives.
• Build and empower a high-performing underwriting organization while partnering with Sales, Actuarial, Finance, Product, Network Management, and Operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of health insurance underwriting experience, or 12+ years of related underwriting, pricing, or healthcare business experience in lieu of a degree.
• Progressive leadership experience in underwriting, strategic pricing, actuarial partnership, or commercial insurance operations.
• Strong business and financial acumen, including experience with growth, profitability, forecasting, and performance management.
• Ability to influence senior leaders and translate complex data into business decisions.
• Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and executive presence.

Nice to have

• MBA or another advanced degree.
• Experience with Large Group and Commercial Employer markets.
• Experience leading complex pricing, underwriting, or business transformation initiatives.
• Six Sigma, Lean, or process improvement certification or experience.
• Understanding of healthcare financing, risk management, and employer-sponsored health plans.
