Principal Design Engineer (React)

Location: United States of America; flexible hybrid work with occasional in-person events or team sessions.

Salary: $136,125–$283,750 per year, plus possible discretionary annual bonus or commissions.

What you will do

• Design and build core interactions for AI-assisted creative and engineering tools, including selection, direct manipulation, panel layouts, keyboard navigation, and UI states.
• Shape the tool’s visual language through layout, typography, hierarchy, motion, and component-state design.
• Author, implement, and preview interactive and motion behavior within the platform.
• Ship production-quality interfaces with React and TypeScript using code review, Git branching, and continuous integration workflows.
• Partner with internal product teams to turn user feedback, friction points, and edge cases into shipped features.
• Raise standards for interaction quality, accessibility, performance, and collaboration between design and engineering.

Requirements

• 8+ years of relevant experience shipping interactive tools such as editors, design software, canvas tools, or complex internal platforms.
• Strong hands-on experience building production UI components with modern React and TypeScript.
• Strong command of typography, layout, color, spacing, hierarchy, motion, and micro-interactions.
• Experience taking work from problem framing through exploration, prototyping, and polished UI, while explaining design decisions and tradeoffs.
• Experience building with or contributing to design systems.
• Clickable portfolio or demo showing live interactive web applications or design tools designed and built by the candidate.

Nice to have

• Experience with editor architecture, rendering optimization, direct manipulation, spatial layouts, or editor software.
• Experience with AI-generated UI systems, LLM-driven interfaces, or canvas-based generation tools.
• Knowledge of web performance profiling and accessible interaction patterns for complex tools.
