Design Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, New York City, Seattle, or London

Base compensation: $143,000–$234,000 in San Francisco and New York; $129,000–$211,000 in other US locations, plus equity.

What you will do

• Own, maintain, and improve the Writer Design System for human developers and AI coding agents.
• Design and build production-quality UI components and product features from concept through release.
• Develop design-led polish, micro-interactions, and brand moments across the product.
• Architect UI primitives and keep Figma, documentation, libraries, and Storybook synchronized.
• Set front-end standards for accessibility, motion, consistency, and quality.
• Improve design-to-code workflows and partner with designers, product managers, and engineering leads to drive adoption.

Requirements

• 4–8+ years of experience building production frontends with TypeScript and React.
• Experience owning a design system, platform, or product surface end to end and driving adoption across an engineering organization.
• Expert-level Figma skills, including auto-layout, variants, variables, and Code Connect.
• Experience with Framer Motion, GSAP, and Lottie, plus strong knowledge of animation principles and perceived performance.
• Production or portfolio experience with systems-level design engineering work, accessibility, and high-quality interaction design.
• Experience with AI product surfaces such as tool-call interfaces, streaming responses, agent state, and dynamic UI rendering.
