QPU Production Test Development Manager (Quantum Hardware)

Location: College Park, Maryland, United States. The role involves work across multiple laboratories and collaboration with partners in Minnesota and the design team in Oxford. Access to export-controlled technology requires U.S. Person status or an applicable license or license exception.

Salary: $160,000–$240,000 per year

What you will do

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of test engineers and technicians while establishing effective laboratory practices.
• Own QPU test strategy from design validation through manufacturing verification at die and package level.
• Define test coverage, procedures, pass/fail criteria, standard reports, and acceptance criteria across sites and test stations.
• Coordinate parallel test campaigns, laboratory readiness, equipment qualification, calibration, maintenance, budgets, and milestones.
• Build automated test infrastructure and workflows while tracking repeatability, cycle time, data quality, coverage, and traceability.
• Lead root cause analysis of ambiguous results and QPU failures, presenting risks and recommendations for design, selection, and release decisions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, applied physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Significant experience testing complex hardware or experimental systems, including ownership of test plans, measurement methods, and technical results.
• Strong experimental troubleshooting skills and understanding of measurement uncertainty, repeatability, and data analysis.
• Experience leading engineers or technical laboratory teams as both a people manager and technical lead of cross-functional test programs.
• Experience developing or overseeing test automation, preferably using Python, and working across hardware, software, science, and manufacturing disciplines.
• U.S. Person status or the ability to obtain the required export-control authorization may be required for access to controlled technology and government-contract work.

Nice to have

• Experience with trapped-ion systems, quantum hardware, precision optical systems, or complex physics-based instruments.
• Experience with optics and lasers, vacuum, cryogenic systems, electronics, control systems, or device packaging.
• Electrical testing and characterization at die and package level, including cryogenic temperatures.
• Experience building new-product test capability and transferring methods into repeatable manufacturing workflows.
• Experience in a startup or scale-up environment.
