Software Power Systems Engineer (Python)

Location: Austin, Texas, US; remote work is available for highly qualified candidates. Occasional travel may be required, up to 10%.

What you will do

• Design and implement production-grade Python libraries and services for distribution analysis, power flow orchestration, and optimization.
• Scale simulations across thousands of feeders and full-year time series through parallelization, cloud batch processing, and performance tuning.
• Build data models and converters for CYME, Synergi, WindMil, OpenDSS, GIS, and other utility network systems.
• Develop algorithms for hosting capacity, DER valuation, automated mitigation, and long-term grid planning.
• Create validation suites, automated tests, and engineering benchmarks for accurate platform results.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and client delivery teams through technical reviews, workshops, demonstrations, and user training.

Requirements

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a power systems focus, or a bachelor's degree with equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of combined distribution-system analysis and software-development experience for Engineer III, or 7+ years for Principal-level roles.
• Expert knowledge of three-phase unbalanced distribution systems, power-flow formulations, and distribution planning.
• Hands-on experience with a distribution modeling tool such as OpenDSS, CYME, Synergi, WindMil, or GridLAB-D, including APIs or automation interfaces.
• Strong Python engineering skills covering packaging, typing, testing, Git, code review, and CI/CD.
• Experience with numerical methods, optimization, large datasets, and tools such as Pyomo, JuMP, Gurobi, HiGHS, pandas, Polars, SQL, or Parquet.

Nice to have

• Experience with Rust, C++, Julia, or Java; cloud-native development; containers; distributed computing; or high-performance computing.
• Contributions to open-source power-systems tools or experience with DER integration, DERMS, flexible interconnection, and non-wires alternatives.
• Experience with GIS, utility network data models, machine learning, AI tools, IEEE PES, or related industry working groups.
