Staff Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Farringdon, London, UK; hybrid model with three days per week in the office

What you will do

• Architect, build, and optimize high-performance microservices and distributed systems for mission-critical customer fulfillment services.
• Lead technical decisions for a greenfield program, establishing design patterns, quality standards, and maintainable engineering practices.
• Design asynchronous messaging and event-driven architectures focused on high throughput, low latency, and reliability.
• Develop and integrate APIs and microservices with enterprise and third-party platforms.
• Diagnose complex technical issues in real time and collaborate with operations teams, hardware specialists, data scientists, and other stakeholders.
• Mentor junior engineers and use Agentic AI tools such as Tab 9 and Gemini to improve developer workflows.

Requirements

• Deep experience with Java 21, modern functional idioms, Spring Boot, and performance patterns.
• Extensive experience with Apache Kafka, asynchronous messaging, event-driven architecture, and low-latency systems.
• Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL technologies, including PostgreSQL and Couchbase.
• Hands-on experience with Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and automated development practices.
• Experience building reliable distributed Java products using Agile methodologies, design patterns such as CQRS and eventual consistency, TDD, and complex domain modeling.
• Ability to work from the London office three days per week in a hybrid model.
