TL;DR
Robotics GNC Engineer (Marine Robotics): Developing localization, state estimation, navigation, and control software for an autonomous hull-crawling marine robot with an accent on sensor integration, simulation, and verification. Focus on fusing inertial, odometry, and vision data, validating GNC software through SIL/HIL testing, and solving reliability challenges with physical hardware in underwater environments.

Location: In-office position in Medford, USA

Company

hirify.global develops autonomous marine robots that clean the hulls of commercial ships while they are underway, reducing fuel consumption and maritime emissions.

What you will do

  • Develop and deploy localization, state estimation, navigation, and control software for an autonomous marine robot.
  • Integrate and characterize sensors, applying filtering, sensor fusion, and production software development.
  • Combine inertial, wheel odometry, vision, and other vehicle sensors to estimate robot state in challenging environments.
  • Build Software-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop simulations and verification tests.
  • Define subsystem requirements, interfaces, failure modes, and performance metrics, and analyze vehicle data to improve algorithms.
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and test engineers on system tuning, integration, and on-vehicle testing.

Requirements

  • Strong fundamentals in robotics, controls, state estimation, or autonomous systems.
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Python.
  • Hands-on experience integrating physical sensors and developing software that interacts directly with hardware.
  • Experience with sensor characterization, data filtering, state estimation, or sensor fusion.
  • 1–7 years of relevant professional experience, or substantial graduate-level research or student engineering experience.
  • U.S. work authorization and eligibility under applicable export-control requirements are required; the role requires immediate access to controlled technical information.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Kalman filtering, inertial navigation, wheel or visual odometry, SLAM, or related estimation techniques.
  • Experience with SIL/HIL systems, ROS or ROS 2, real-time or embedded robotic software, and automated testing or fault injection.
  • Background in marine robotics, field robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or other difficult operating environments.
  • Graduate research in robotics, controls, estimation, or autonomous systems, or experience on a hands-on student engineering team.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time, in-office work as part of the GNC and broader engineering teams.
  • Direct work on autonomous robots operating underwater on moving commercial ships.
  • Opportunity to take robotic systems from prototype development to deployed products.
  • Work involving real-world vehicle testing and integration across software and physical hardware.
