Staff Software Engineer (Speech/Audio)

Location: Remote within the United States

Salary: $187,000–$265,000 annually, plus equity

What you will do

• Serve as technical lead for the Speech function, setting technical direction, driving architecture decisions, and mentoring engineers.
• Partner with Research Scientists to move speech models from evaluation into production.
• Build and evolve real-time audio capture and streaming in a React and TypeScript web application.
• Design and operate distributed Python backend services and supporting infrastructure.
• Debug production issues and improve reliability and performance with observability tools such as Sentry and Grafana.
• Collaborate with Product, UX, Customer Success, Infrastructure, and Research teams to ship features in a high-scale, HIPAA-compliant environment.

Requirements

• 7+ years of industry experience developing audio or multimedia software.
• Strong full-stack experience with TypeScript, React, and Python.
• Experience with browser audio APIs, including Web Audio and AudioWorklet, real-time audio streaming, WebSockets, and client-server communication.
• Experience building and operating distributed systems, applying strong unit and integration testing practices, and debugging production issues with observability tools.
• Proven technical leadership, including mentoring engineers and driving technical direction across a team.
• Must be located in the United States for this remote role.

Nice to have

• Experience with FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL, Terraform, and large-scale data storage.
• Experience with ASR/STT, speech recognition, NLP, or other ML-driven products from model evaluation through production monitoring.
• Experience with HIPAA-compliant environments, FHIR, HL7, Auth0, spec-driven development, or AI-assisted engineering tools.
• Startup experience and experience working on distributed teams.
