What you will do

• Manage investigative journalists and beat reporters covering local government, politics, communities, and schools.
• Lead investigative strategy, accountability coverage, and reporting priorities across the newsroom.
• Help reporters develop story ideas, sources, records requests, and lines of questioning.
• Balance daily news, enterprise stories, and long-term investigative projects.
• Coach and mentor reporters at different experience levels and foster collaboration.
• Edit stories for accuracy, clarity, structure, fairness, and style.

Requirements

• Strong management skills and an encouraging, collaborative leadership approach.
• Solid editing experience, including story direction, framing, structure, style, accuracy, and fairness.
• Demonstrable experience and impact in investigative or accountability journalism.
• Experience leading complex, long-running enterprise journalism, including legal reviews, sensitive sources, public records requests, and reporting pressure.
• Commitment to diversity, inclusion, fairness, accuracy, ethics, and the communities served.
• Must reside in California while working remotely.
