US Data Journalist (Data Journalism)

Location: New York City or Washington, DC. External applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Newsroom staff are expected to work onsite a minimum of three days per week; occasional weekend or flexible working may be required.

Salary: $85,000–$115,000 per year.

What you will do

• Cover US politics, economics, financial news, trade, financial markets, elections and campaign finance.
• Develop original data-driven stories from initial pitch through final publication.
• Source, scrape, clean and analyse data using R or Python, APIs and large databases.
• Explain quantitative analysis clearly to non-specialist audiences.
• Collaborate with US-based editors and correspondents, colleagues across North America, London and Hong Kong, and the wider Visual & Data Journalism team.
• Support reporters and editors across the FT network with data-driven reporting methods.

Requirements

• Strong portfolio of data journalism, ideally focused on business, finance, economics or North American politics.
• Experience using data journalism or data science techniques to find and tell news stories.
• Confidence using R or Python for data sourcing, web scraping, API use, cleaning and analysis.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain quantitative work simply.
• Ability to pitch, write and deliver original data-driven stories independently.
• Eligibility to work in the United States for external applicants.

Nice to have

• Effective use of data visualisation in reporting.
• Training in statistics, data science or quantitative social science methods.
• Experience building or maintaining data acquisition and processing pipelines.
• Financial or business journalism experience, collaborative coding with Git, or familiarity with Adobe Illustrator.
