Senior Staff Perception Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Waltham Office, United States. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Base pay: $150,000–$190,000 annually, plus benefits and an annual bonus structure.

What you will do

• Set the technical direction and architecture for Stretch’s perception stack.
• Own key perception pipelines, including object detection, tracking, and state estimation.
• Define requirements and integrate perception systems with controls, manipulation, software, hardware, and product teams.
• Drive reliable, robust, and maintainable perception system development and maintenance.
• Champion first-principles thinking, robust testing, code reviews, performance analysis, and real-time system design.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across the team.

Requirements

• 10+ years of industry experience building perception systems, or 8+ years with an MS or 6+ years with a PhD, including shipping software on robots.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
• Deep expertise in point cloud processing, tracking and filtering, state estimation, SLAM, and sensor calibration algorithms.
• Technical leadership experience in robotics or a related domain, including project ownership, technical direction, and cross-team collaboration.
• Strong C++ and Python skills in production environments.
• Experience diagnosing and improving system performance using real-world data.

Nice to have

• Experience with real-time or latency-constrained systems and edge computing.
• Background in warehouse, logistics, or manipulation applications.
• Practical experience with deep learning models for computer vision.
