Staff/Principal Engineer (AI)

Location: New York City, NY, USA; hybrid schedule with 3 in-office days per week. NYC-based candidates or candidates open to relocation are preferred.

Salary: $250,000–$300,000 per year, plus equity and bonus eligibility.

What you will do

• Own the architecture for AI assistants and workflow agents, including reasoning loops, planning, decomposition, state, sessions, and recovery behavior.
• Build retrieval, memory, and context-window systems over construction documents, jurisdictional requirements, prior submissions, and customer conventions.
• Design tool interfaces, permission models, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints for expensive or irreversible actions.
• Build offline and online evaluation harnesses to measure task completion, failure modes, and agent quality.
• Establish abstractions, SDKs, and review standards for agentic product development across the engineering organization.
• Work directly with permit coordinators and builders to observe real-world failures and improve system design.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including recent work building LLM-powered products.
• Experience shipping an assistant or agentic product at meaningful scale.
• Deep knowledge of tool calling, tool design, context engineering, memory, retrieval, and orchestration patterns.
• Experience building evaluation harnesses and defining trustworthy evaluation methods.
• Strong production software engineering experience with ownership of services and maintainable code.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement in New York City, with 3 in-office days per week.
