Applied AI Engineer (Lab Automation)

Location: London, UK. Hybrid policy requires staff to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time, and the role requires significant travel across EMEA.

What you will do

• Automate laboratory experiments end-to-end with Claude, from advising and prototyping through production code.
• Connect Claude and the Model Hardware Standard to scientific hardware and software used in research laboratories.
• Use field experience to guide product, engineering, and research direction, including model evaluations for physical-world capabilities and safety.
• Develop new Model Hardware Standard features and scalable cookbooks, documentation, and other reusable assets.
• Represent Claude across EMEA by building trust with scientific audiences and presenting at conferences.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or experience in a relevant field.
• Hands-on experience connecting software to laboratory robots and instruments such as liquid handlers, plate readers, scheduling software, and LIMS.
• Strong engineering ability to take an LLM-powered tool from prototype to production and write evaluations to measure performance.
• Understanding of scientific experimentation, including where automation is valuable and where AI may fail or be unsafe in the physical world.
• Experience working directly with external customers or partners in a technical role.
• Clear written and verbal communication, including technical documentation and presentations for scientific audiences.
