TL;DR

Technical Writer (Federal) (regulatory and technical documentation): Creating SOPs, user manuals, policy handbooks, and executive correspondence for federal programs and technical systems with an accent on regulatory accuracy, accessibility, and plain-language communication. Focus on researching complex federal requirements, collaborating with SMEs and legal teams, and maintaining document version control across multi-author projects.

Location: Remote work from Virginia, United States. US citizenship and the ability to pass a Public Trust investigation are required.

Salary: $100,000–$110,000 per year

What you will do

Create, edit, and format SOPs, user manuals, policy handbooks, and executive correspondence.
Research federal programs, policies, technical systems, legislation, and engineering documentation.
Collaborate with subject matter experts, program managers, and legal teams.
Ensure deliverables follow federal standards, including GPO, CIGIE, and accessibility requirements.
Translate technical and legal concepts into clear materials for non-technical stakeholders, leadership, and congressional audiences.
Manage document libraries, revisions, and configuration control across multi-author projects.

Requirements

US citizenship required.
Ability to pass a Public Trust investigation.
Bachelor's degree in a related field.
5+ years of experience in information technology.
Exceptional grammar, syntax, editing, and style-guide skills, including GPO, APA, or Chicago.
Knowledge of U.S. Code, federal regulations, agency directives, Microsoft Office, and desktop publishing tools.

Nice to have

Section 508 accessibility compliance experience or certification.
Familiarity with FAR or CIGIE standards.
Experience with SharePoint, Confluence, Git, or similar collaboration and version-control tools.
Advanced degree or professional certification in technical communication.
Federal-sector experience in defense, healthcare, transportation research, or law enforcement.
