Data Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Ingest, organize, store, manage, validate, and securely transport structured and unstructured data within the SUNet environment.
• Execute approved transfers between authorized systems, storage locations, enclaves, and users while following security and data-handling requirements.
• Maintain data inventories, metadata, storage records, transfer documentation, standard operating procedures, and operational runbooks.
• Support on-premises and cloud storage operations, including capacity monitoring, dataset organization, lifecycle activities, and migrations.
• Coordinate Change Requests, customer requirements, user and data-source onboarding, testing events, and capability demonstrations.
• Develop scripts and automation for data validation, transfers, reporting, and repetitive operational processes; troubleshoot routine access, permission, connectivity, and storage issues.

Requirements

• Foundational experience with data management, Linux, cloud technologies, scripting, and information technology.
• Python, Bash, SQL, Linux administration, AWS and cloud storage fundamentals.
• Knowledge of metadata, manifests, checksums, data lineage, lifecycle management, access controls, and data quality.
• Experience or familiarity with secure transfers such as SFTP/SCP, object-storage transfers, APIs, encryption, and large-file transfer concepts.
• Understanding of CUI and Department of Defense data-handling requirements, including authorized access, least privilege, auditability, and controlled data movement.
• Self-starter able to execute routine technical work independently and resolve engineering challenges with limited supervision.

Nice to have

• CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Linux+, AWS Solutions Architect–Associate, or Network+ certification at hire or within 6–12 months.
• Git/GitLab, CI/CD, Docker or Podman, change and configuration management experience.
