Staff Software Engineer, Security

Location: Chicago, United States

Salary: $160,000–$220,000 annually for roles performed from California; compensation may vary for Colorado, Illinois, and New York.

What you will do

• Set the technical vision and lead architectural decisions for security engineering.
• Build and improve customer identity management, authentication, authorization, and observability systems.
• Secure distributed, event-based systems and generative AI infrastructure protecting patient records and intellectual property.
• Manage security microservices, frameworks, tooling, and emerging identity standards across a microservice architecture.
• Lead build-versus-buy decisions, identify engineering gaps, and drive improvements in security practices and delivery velocity.
• Mentor engineers, document technical practices, and collaborate with product and engineering teams on priorities and trade-offs.

Requirements

• Several years of software development experience with technical leadership, architecture, and design responsibilities.
• Experience developing and securing distributed, event-based systems at significant transaction or data volume.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or Google Cloud and tools including Docker, Terraform, or Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with an identity management platform such as Auth0, Okta, Microsoft Entra, or Ping Identity.
• Ability to work with multiple programming languages and frameworks in fast-paced, agile environments.
• Strong cross-functional communication, documentation, mentoring, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Deep knowledge of OAuth, SCIM, and SAML.
• Experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, Node, or Python.
• Experience with OAuth 2.1 agentic controls, Chronicle or other SIEMs, and authorization models such as RBAC, ReBAC, ABAC, and PBAC.
