Payroll Manager - Europe

What you will do

• Own end-to-end payroll across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland, with possible scope for Bulgaria.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing, including statutory registrations, employment changes, variable pay, benefits, and payroll reporting.
• Stabilize and optimize global payroll operations using Deel, including completing country migrations and improving integrations with HR, finance, commission, and benefits systems.
• Maintain payroll governance, controls, approval frameworks, RACI definitions, SOPs, documentation, and audit readiness.
• Manage vendor governance and issue resolution with Deel, including root-cause analysis of recurring problems.
• Lead, develop, and coach the payroll team while partnering with Finance, Accounting, Tax, HR Operations, Country Managers, and senior leadership.

Requirements

• 10+ years of payroll experience, including significant international multi-country payroll experience and several years in a leadership role.
• Experience operating payroll across multiple European jurisdictions; experience with Italy, France, and Germany is strongly advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of payroll tax, statutory compliance, labour law interactions, and registration requirements for new hires and leavers.
• Experience with commission-heavy or variable-pay structures and global payroll platforms; Deel experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience designing and maintaining payroll governance, controls, approval frameworks, and audit-ready processes.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, is required.

• Experience with Bulgaria payroll.
• Additional European languages.
