Lead Systems Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: Tucson, Arizona, United States; the role supports travel or off-site work as needed.

What you will do

• Develop system, electrical, and functional architectures for space-based optical instruments, subsystems, and payloads on airborne and space platforms.
• Define, decompose, and manage system requirements covering electrical behavior, controls, subsystem interactions, and overall performance.
• Create and maintain architecture descriptions, interface control documents, electrical interface definitions, concepts of operations, state and mode descriptions, test plans, and verification artifacts.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, firmware, and test teams on payload development, integration, debugging, and verification.
• Support architecture trades involving sensors, motor control, embedded electronics, power systems, command and data handling, and subsystem interfaces.
• Identify and help mitigate technical risks, participate in technical interchange meetings, and support customer and partner discussions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, systems, aerospace engineering, or another technical discipline.
• 12+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years supporting development programs and 2+ years in technical leadership, CAM, IPTL, or an equivalent role.
• Systems engineering experience focused on electrical architecture, subsystem integration, controls, requirements, interfaces, and verification.
• Strong background in aerospace, payload, avionics, instrument, or other complex electrical systems, including integration and system-level testing.
• Experience with requirements management and modeling tools such as JAMA, DOORS, Cameo, or similar platforms.
• For US office work, candidates must meet applicable ITAR eligibility or authorization requirements, including qualifying US citizenship, permanent residency, refugee or asylee status, or required government authorizations.

Nice to have

• Current SSBI clearance.
• EO/IR payload integration, spacecraft bus interfaces, payload electrical integration, avionics architecture, or embedded electronics experience.
• Experience with pointing, stabilization, gimbals, motion control, focus and control electronics, or closed-loop control applications.
• Experience with astronomy, physics, remote sensing, sensors, actuators, motors, power systems, or embedded controllers.
• Hands-on leadership of system-level electrical or controls troubleshooting and resolution.
