Senior Software Engineer (Java/AWS)

Location: Remote in New South Wales, Australia; optional fortnightly team gatherings at WeWork offices and an annual in-person DevCamp.

What you will do

• Build, own, and maintain robust software solutions using object-oriented programming and sound engineering judgment.
• Contribute to technical direction, facilitate architecture discussions, modernise legacy systems, and coach teammates through complex engineering work.
• Own and evolve Kafka-based messaging and event infrastructure for reliable, scalable downstream systems.
• Collaborate on AWS services including Fargate, Bedrock, EC2, ECS, SNS/SQS, RDS, and Elasticsearch.
• Work with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, infrastructure as code, deployment automation, and SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Lead rotational on-call support, improve reliability and monitoring, document technical decisions, collaborate across disciplines, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 9+ years of software development experience with commercial object-oriented programming expertise.
• Strong Java experience and at least one additional programming language; C# is preferred.
• Experience with Kafka or other message bus systems and microservices.
• Deep knowledge of system design, scalable architecture, AWS or comparable cloud technologies, infrastructure, and DevOps practices.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and both SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Daily experience with AI coding or review assistants and the ability to critically evaluate their output.

Nice to have

• C# experience.
• Experience modernising legacy systems and improving developer tooling or engineering workflows.
